I will do the best I can to give accurate details. Was in Springdale AR last night for my child's softball tournament. By the time our stuff was done and we got to the game, we got there just in time to see the Ambulance leaving with him.
#88 Amekka Nneka (please forgive me if I misspelled that). He has been admitted to Washington Regional in Fayetteville, AR. We spent the night just a couple blocks from the hospital and were able to make connections with James Ashford and his family as they were at his bedside late last night. Early diagnoses (which may change as they get a better look with the swelling going down) was very serious. They are waiting on the swelling to go down before they can go into the neck and repair some of the damage. Doctors are being very cautious about giving too much hope but Amekka has not given up on making a full recovery just yet.
He is very concerned about contacting all of his teammates to be sure they know he's okay and wants to be sure they're okay as well. So if you all can give him some kind of communication that would be great for him. Last word I got I think family (all live in Georgia) are trying their best to get to him as fast as they can. James and his family will be with him until then I'm sure.
Everyone lift him up!
Heather
I will keep him in my thoughts.
I just hope the guy has insurance threw his employer, because I am positive that he will be medically, mentally and finacially ruined via a lack of descent league wide health insurance. I just looked at the policy that AFLAC is offering the players for $28 a month, and according to the paperwork he will only be covered for the first $3000 associated w/ this injury.
Maybe its time we think about creating a fund for this gentleman.
Although there isn't league wide mandated insurance we offer insurance, the Thunder organization and unity therapy services has already taken care of Emeka's after care for life, so he and his family will not be "ruined". As usual we are spending too much time worrying about what we are doing and not what is important. Emeka will be taken care of because that is how we do things here. There may not be a league wide policy but there is a team policy and the Thunder policy is to take care of our own, continued thoughts and prayers are needed. Emeka went in to surgery at 730 am. It is an eight hour procedure. I will update his condition when surgery is over and we have talked to his doctor.
